Felted wool is thought to be the oldest hand-made fabric in the world. It first developed during the Neolithic period, and we have actual samples dating back to the Bronze Age. It was probably developed in Central Asia, when herders packed their shoes with raw wool to increase comfort. Herders found that after some time, the movement and the sweat agitated the wool and matted the fibers together. This formed the soft warm wool fabric, we call felt!
All wool fibers have microscopic scales, which tend to tangle the wools fibers together. The wool fibers can be tanged by two different processes: wet felting, where the simple agitation of wet wool creates felt (as in the story discussed above), or by dry felting, where a sharp needle with little barbs is used to tangle the wool fibers tougher. Pacia uses the dry felting technique.
I offer monthly workshops at the center, as well as private classes in my studio. These sessions provide a unique opportunity to explore the art of felting and unleash your creativity.
